School of History Culture and Tourism, founded in 1941, has the history and academic heritage of more than 70 years, that previously named as the Literature and History Department, College of Literature and Law, National Chung Cheng University. The School’s famous scholars including Yao Mingda, Wu Shidong, Gu Jiguang, Huang Jinyan etc. have worked here. Currently, we have four disciplines or departments such as History (teacher training), Cultural Relics and Museology, Cultural Industry Management and Tourism Management. We have a Doctoral program, which is for the study on Marxism in China, and five Master programs, which include academic studies on Chinese History, World history, and Tourism Management; and applied research on MTA and History Teaching.
We have several research centers as follows: Research Center of Traditional Society and the Modernization of Jiangxi Province, The Revitalization of Soviet Regions Research Institute, Research Center of Southern Ancient Villages, Research Center of Chinese Social Transformation, Chinese Economic History Research Institute, Regional Society Research on Data Center, and European and American Research Center, etc.. Moreover, History Association of Jiangxi Province is affiliated to our School. As to History, we have been awarded the high-level discipline, key discipline, provincial specialty and brand specialty in Jiangxi province. Chinese Early Modern History teaching team is a national teaching team. As to Tourism Management, we have a pilot project of national comprehensive reform, and have a pilot base for Jiangxi gold-interpretation class. Cultural Industry Management Department has a base of Jiangxi Non-Material Culture Research Center.
We have 66 teachers and staffs, of whom 54 are full-time teachers, and have a reasonable and powerful contingent of teachers. Among them, there are 16 professors, 25 associate professors, 13 lecturers and 1 teaching assistants. 37 of them have PhD, 2 professors enjoy the special allowance of the State Council, 3 enjoy the provincial government expert special allowance, 1 national excellent teachers, 1 provincial young experts with outstanding contributions, 8 young academic leaders, 6 young backbone teachers, 4 talents in provincial project of “Hundred and Thousand Talents”, 1 leading expert of philosophical and social science, 1 philosophical and social science research backbone teacher,2 experts of the provincial project of “Gan-Po 555 Talents”. We have several visiting scholars who have once been to Harvard University, University of Cambridge, and etc; and we have a well-known speaker showing on the CCTV platform column “Lecture Room”.
We attach great importance to personnel training. The students of the school obtained the highest honor on the campus, "top ten students" for three consecutive years and on behalf of the school, to Britain or the United States. History normal students take part in the basic skills competition of the national normal school students, the students from the gold-interpretation classes participated in the National Tourism University service skills (tour guide service) competition, who won first prize, second prize and third prize and other achievements. Our students have colorful and eclectic activities. They enjoy some off-campus bases in Beijing, Shanghai and Jiangxi, which provide students with a wide range of practice sites. We have a campus boutique tour guide team, which takes on both home and abroad tour guide tasks, takes on tour guide competition and the “top ten singers” of the campus. We have a party service station and a team of volunteers for the protection of intangible cultural heritage in Jiangxi. We have two programs as “teacher support for the red earth” and National teachers training”, which provide an in-depth training platform for normal students, so that their learning can be seamlessly integrated with society and lay a solid foundation for future work.
We own a library, which has professional books more than 165000 volumes, among of which, Britain, Russia, Japan and other foreign books are more than 1500 volumes, 32 kinds of foreign language periodicals, traditional thread binding Chinese books more than 2430 volumes, 4766 Bound volumes of Periodicals, early newspaper files more than 1796 copies. Our library has electronic version of text such as “Sikuquanshu” (The Four Categories), “Qingshilu”(The History of Qing Dynasty), “Twenty-Five Histories”. We have the only cultural exhibition room in Jiangxi province for teaching and research, and also have a local literature and information office.
In the past five years, we have published nearly 500 papers and 30 books, and have been rewarded 21 provincial and ministerial levels awards. At present, 17 teachers got national social science fund project, and 19 teachers got the Humanities and Social Sciences projects form the Ministry of Education, and we have the Provincial Social Sciences and university humanities base project more than 70.
Currently, we have more than 1100 undergraduates and more than 230 master students. The employment prospects of the students are vast, and the initial employment rate in the past five years has exceeded 90%, thus for several times won the “Advanced School” for employment in our university. We have trained more than 10 thousand graduates since the establishment of the education system, most of whom are the backbone of teachers, of tourism industry, of hotel, of exhibition industry, of the cultural system. What’s more, some graduates have become well-known experts, scholars and professors, including outstanding alumni in leadership positions at all levels.
